July 10, 2010 - Dalton wins at Delta Speedway

Saturday July 10th I returned to Delta Speedway. My crew & I decided that since Plaza Park was dark all of July, we should run Delta Speedway and use it as a test session. We were going to learn & try new things with our car. As long as it rolled into the trailer in the same condition we rolled it out as, it was going to be a good night.

I hit the track for hot laps and the dust was already flying. I just knew it was going to be a long night. They gave us the green & when I hit the first corner on the high side, the car rolled through beautifully. I stayed on the high side the whole time and the car felt blazin fast. After a few laps, practice was over. I told my crew it was a tick on the tight side but it was an awesome car.

When it came time for the first heat, We freed up the car some. I was starting dead last in the 6th position. The track was getting worse and with cars running both high & low I wasn't able to pass easily, but the car handled very well. After the 10 lap heat race I had finished 4th.  I told my crew that the track had begun to rut up in the entry of 1 & 3 but other then that everything was perfect. When we rolled off the track the officials annouced they would be taking a 30 - 60 minute break in order to try & save the track. I was greatful to hear this because the track had really gone away.

After about 45 minutes they called us to the track. We were going to wheel pack. After about a 15 minute wheel pack session, they felt the track was ready and sent out the 5/8 class first.

For our 2nd heat we were starting on the pole. We didnt change much to the car from the previous race. I led flag to flag with almost a half lap margin of victory. I told the crew this car was absolutly perfect, it couldnt have been any better.

The line ups were posted for the feature & I was starting 3rd. After watching the multi & non-wing divisions, to see how the track was, we elected to tighten the car up just a little more. At the start of the race, I was on the bottom. I knew I had to get to the top to be fast. However I was starting on the inside & I lost alot of momentum on the first corner & the leader began to pull away. By the end of the first lap, he had pulled to almost a straight away lead. In just 2 laps I caught him and the battle began. When I tried to go low, he would cut me off. If I tried to go high, he would slide up in front of me. About lap 7 I was able to get around him. He stayed right with me and at the very same corner I passed him, I made a mistake and this set him up for the pass in turn 3 & 4. We continued our battle for just a couple more laps while making our way though lapped traffic. I was in 2nd right on the leaders tail when he made a critical mistake & spun out. The caution came out & I was re-starting this race in the lead. After just 2 laps the caution came out again for another car spun out on the track. On this re-start I pulled to a commanding lead and led the rest of the race without ever being challenged.

For my 2nd race at this track, it was an awesome feeling to come home with a victory. The crew and I discussed the changes we made to the car & feel we can still get some more out of her. We will be returning this Saturday, July 17th, with hopes of making it 2 in a row.
